A partial setting of the midnight liturgy, not explicitly intended for liturgical use, and the first study written following the transitional works composed for the Prolegomena, the primary purpose of which was to explore the problems of writing in larger forms with the shade and contour of a line as the primary value in musical composition. The secondary goal of the study was to find a notational format, via negativa, that could overcome the obstacles of time, rhythm, space, and definite intonation.
